AYCGL Experiential Education Programs for 2023-23

This programming will facilitate the integration and application of classroom content, deepening students’ understanding of the history of Black people in the U.S., including enslavement, tools of oppression (Jim Crow, lynching, etc.), mass incarceration, as well as exposure to the culture, resistance, and leadership of Black people in the United States.

Funded by a $50,000 award from the Julian Grace Foundation, the AYCGL’s experiential education programming will support three excursions during the 2023-24 academic year. On November 4, 2023, the AYCGL will host a guided visit for 100 students to the Equal Justice Initiative – Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, AL, In February 2023, the Center will host a guided visit for 70 students to the International African American Museum and Avery Center in Charleston, SC, and during J-mester 2024, the Center will host a guided study tour of Gullah-Geechee culture and history in North and South Carolina.
