Morehouse in Ireland: Civil Rights and Social Justice Study Abroad Program

This study abroad experience will explore transatlantic perspectives on as well as parallels between Ireland and the USA. Beginning with Frederick Douglass’ tour of Ireland (1844-1845), where he was called the “Black O’Connell”, the Liberator, this course will draw contested comparisons between the civil rights movement in the USA and the 30-year long conflict—the so-called “troubles”—in Northern Ireland.

AYCGL Scholar-in-Residence, Walter Fluker, Ph.D., will present a two-part Teach-in on ethical leadership, Wake Up Running! Public Conversations on Spirituality, Ethics and Leadership for New Rhythms and Times. Session 2 is entitled: Run to the Mountain! Martin Luther King, Jr. on the Run: Creating and Cultivating Democratic Spaces in National and Global Communities of The World House. The 2nd installment of the series will take place Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 4:00 pm in the African American Hall of Fame.

April 1, 2025: Dr. Puleng Segalo will present, Stitching Narratives of Gender Based Violence: Meaning Making through Embroidery.

The presentation will take place at 11:00 am in Dansby Hall, room 209. Professor Segalo is a Fulbright scholar, Professor of Psychology and Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair at the University of South Africa. Dr. Segalo is the 2013 recipient of the UNISA Principal Prize for excellence in research, the 2014 winner of the National Science and Technology Young Women in Science Award, and the 2021/2022 regional winner of The World Academy of Science award. Dr. Segalo is passionate about mental-health and community well-being.

The conference will provide attendees with a special opportunity to exchange ideas and resources, forge new collaborations, re-connect with old friends, and deepen knowledge and skills in topics of particular interest.
