Oprah Winfrey South Africa Leadership Program
Oprah Winfrey South Africa Leadership Program. Oprah Winfrey scholars will participate in a transformative experience in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pilanesberg, and Cape Town, South Africa. Visits to historic sites, universities, and organizations documenting the history of Apartheid and preserving the legacy of the fight for freedom and justice in South Africa will allow students to learn the extraordinary history of colonization, Apartheid, and revolution in South Africa.

On Thursday, April 10th at 5:30 pm, the AYC-Higher Education in Prisons Program will (Inside) Art (Outside) featuring visual and interactive art, spoken word, poetry, music, video, and more. The event will take place in Sale Hall Chapel.

April 9, 2025: AYCGL Social Justice Leadership Teach-in
AYCGL Scholar-in-Residence, Walter Fluker, Ph.D., will present a two-part Teach-in on ethical leadership, Wake Up Running! Public Conversations on Spirituality, Ethics and Leadership for New Rhythms and Times. Session 2 is entitled: Run to the Mountain! Martin Luther King, Jr. on the Run: Creating and Cultivating Democratic Spaces in National and Global Communities of The World House. The 2nd installment of the series will take place Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 4:00 pm in the African American Hall of Fame.

April 1, 2025: Dr. Puleng Segalo will present, Stitching Narratives of Gender Based Violence: Meaning Making through Embroidery.
The presentation will take place at 11:00 am in Dansby Hall, room 209. Professor Segalo is a Fulbright scholar, Professor of Psychology and Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair at the University of South Africa. Dr. Segalo is the 2013 recipient of the UNISA Principal Prize for excellence in research, the 2014 winner of the National Science and Technology Young Women in Science Award, and the 2021/2022 regional winner of The World Academy of Science award. Dr. Segalo is passionate about mental-health and community well-being.

African American History and Heritage Study Tour
The AYCGL is pleased to host the 2nd African American History and Heritage Study Tour. The study tour will take place in Charleston, South Carolina, and will include visits to numerous historic sites as students learn the history of African Americans from the Transatlantic Slave Trade to the present. Sites include the International African American Museum, the Avery Research Center at the University of Charleston, and the McLeod Plantation. The Exploration of the African Diaspora in the United Kingdom
The Exploration of the African Diaspora in the United Kingdom study abroad program will visit London, Liverpool, and Manchester, U.K. This unique experience will explore the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the British colonies and examine contemporary issues such as the migration of African and Caribbean populations to the UK between 1948 and 1970, known as the Windrush. Students will learn about key figures in Black British history and current grassroots organizing and activism in the U.K.

AUC Passport Day - Spring 2025
AUC Passport Day will be held in partnership with Spelman and Clark Atlanta University (CAU) on the campus of CAU. AUC Passport Day will feature representatives from the Atlanta Passport Agency processing passport applications on site.

Founder’s Day Well-Traveled Event
Held in partnership with the Student Government Association, this event will include a $1000 scholarship raffle for a student to participate in a study abroad program with a Morehouse partner. To learn more, contact the Office of International Education at oie@morehouse.edu.

M.L. King Day of Service 2025
The Andrew Young Center and Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program will host the King Center’s Day of Service on the Morehouse College campus. Oprah Winfrey scholars and other Morehouse students will work alongside community partners to serve the Atlanta community.

AUC Passport Day & International Education Week
The Office of International Education will partner with the Atlanta Passport Agency, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University to host the second annual AUC Passport Day.

The AYCGL Civil Rights Study Tour
The AYCGL Civil Rights Study Tour will travel to Birmingham and Montgomery, AL to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the 16th Street Baptist Church, the Equal Justice Initiative - Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the Freedom Monument Sculpture.

Democracy Delivers: Pursuing Justice, Security, and Inclusive Development around the World

The new International African American Museum in Charleston, SC is home to a number of new collections on the history of Black Americans. The museum documents the journey of Africans to America that occurred centuries ago, and still continues today.

On Tuesday, January 16, 2024, the AYCGL and Oprah Winfrey Programs are co-sponsoring a virtual experience with Clint Smith. Mr. Smith will present on the topic, The Poetics of Racial Healing: Holding the Pain and Possibilities Together.

M.L. King Day of Service
Oprah Winfrey scholars will participate in service at the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, located at 449 Auburn Ave, NE, Atlanta, GA 30312.

National International Education Week
National International Education Week will be celebrated at Morehouse College. The Office of International Education will sponsor a number of activities to celebrate the week!
Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice Day
Individual students, faculty, and entire classes are encouraged to join the AYCGL as we travel to Montgomery, Alabama to experience the EJI Legacy Museum and Peach and Justice Memorial. The Museum chronicles and lays bare the U.S. history of slavery, reconstruction, lynching, and mass incarceration.

Understanding Israel and Palestine: History, Context, and the U.S.
On Thursday, November 2, 2023, the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership will host a teach-in entitled, Understanding Israel and Palestine: History, Context, and the U.S. The teach-in will include three sessions and take place from 1:00 – 5:05 pm in the Bank of America Auditorium, Massey Leadership Building. Please join for one or all sessions.

The Art of Recovery Performance
This exciting event will be hosted by the R2ISE Theatre and will honor first responders, medical personnel and other frontline heroes through the arts. The event will take place in the Ray Charles Performing Arts Auditorium and is free and open to the public.

Young has created a legacy of leading the fight for the human and civil rights of people nationally and globally, providing leadership in pursuit of social justice, and creating opportunity and prosperity among those who are underserved.

Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA) Biennial Conference
Morehouse College will be the first historically Black college/university to host the Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA) Biennial Conference. SCRA Biennial Conferences draw together SCRA and other community members from around the world to engage in stimulating conversations about recent developments in community research and action. The conference will provide attendees with a special opportunity to exchange ideas and resources, forge new collaborations, re-connect with old friends, and deepen knowledge and skills in topics of particular interest. This year’s theme is “Where do we go from here: Dreaming new community futures.”

South Africa Social Justice Experience
South Africa Social Justice Experience: The Institute for Social Justice Inquiry and Praxis will lead it’s second study abroad experience to South Africa. This unique experience focuses on culture, politics, and the contemporary social conditions of South Africa with a special focus on the social activism of South African youth. Students will have an opportunity to visit Johannesburg, Soweto, and Cape Town.
