This spring 2024, AYCGL Scholar-in-Residence, Pamela Winn, will present as part of an AYCGL Teach-in entitled, Policy Advocacy within the Democracy Process.
The Exploration of the African Diaspora in the United Kingdom
This unique experience will explore the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the British colonies and examine contemporary issues such as the migration of African and Caribbean populations to the UK between 1948 and 1970, known as the Windrush Era. Students will learn about key figures in Black British history and current grassroots organizing and activism in the U.K.
Visit to the International African American Museum and Avery Research Center
The new International African American Museum in Charleston, SC is home to a number of new collections on the history of Black Americans. The museum documents the journey of Africans to America that occurred centuries ago, and still continues today.

On Tuesday, January 16, 2024, the AYCGL and Oprah Winfrey Programs are co-sponsoring a virtual experience with Clint Smith. Mr. Smith will present on the topic, The Poetics of Racial Healing: Holding the Pain and Possibilities Together.

Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice Day
Individual students, faculty, and entire classes are encouraged to join the AYCGL as we travel to Montgomery, Alabama to experience the EJI Legacy Museum and Peach and Justice Memorial. The Museum chronicles and lays bare the U.S. history of slavery, reconstruction, lynching, and mass incarceration.
Understanding Israel and Palestine: History, Context, and the U.S.
On Thursday, November 2, 2023, the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership will host a teach-in entitled, Understanding Israel and Palestine: History, Context, and the U.S. The teach-in will include three sessions and take place from 1:00 – 5:05 pm in the Bank of America Auditorium, Massey Leadership Building. This exciting event will be hosted by the R2ISE Theatre and will honor first responders, medical personnel and other frontline heroes through the arts. The event will take place in the Ray Charles Performing Arts Auditorium and is free and open to the public.

Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA) Biennial Conference
Morehouse College will be the first historically Black college/university to host the Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA) Biennial Conference. SCRA Biennial Conferences draw together SCRA and other community members from around the world to engage in stimulating conversations about recent developments in community research and action. The conference will provide attendees with a special opportunity to exchange ideas and resources, forge new collaborations, re-connect with old friends, and deepen knowledge and skills in topics of particular interest. This year’s theme is “Where do we go from here: Dreaming new community futures.”
South Africa Social Justice Experience
South Africa Social Justice Experience: The Institute for Social Justice Inquiry and Praxis will lead it’s second study abroad experience to South Africa. This unique experience focuses on culture, politics, and the contemporary social conditions of South Africa with a special focus on the social activism of South African youth. Students will have an opportunity to visit Johannesburg, Soweto, and Cape Town.

Beyond the Bars: South
The Andrew Young Center, in partnership with the National Executive Council at Columbia University’s Center for Justice, will host a conference at Morehouse College, Beyond the Bars: South. This conference will focus on the relationship between universities or colleges and neighborhoods. Gentrification, income inequality, and mass incarceration have transformed southern cities that are home to leading institutions of higher education. This conference will foster conversations, build relationships, and generate practical solutions for building strong and more resilient communities.
Understanding the Gullah Geechee Roots of Social Justice and Resistance
Understanding the Gullah Geechee Roots of Social Justice and Resistance. The Institute for Social Justice Inquiry and Praxis, in collaboration with Drs. Samuel Livingston (Africana Studies) and Corrie Claiborne (English) will lead a study abroad experience that explores the connection between South Carolina and Barbados. This unique opportunity will bring together students and faculty from Morehouse College and the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, to explore the connections between Gullah Geechee and Barbadian cultural traditions and contemporary social justice issues such as climate justice and reparations.
