The Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership continues the work of the Leadership Center as it seeks to extend the legacy of Ambassador Young and expand the footprint of Morehouse into the community and the world. The Center is home to programs designed to inspire and prepare the men of Morehouse to create and implement solutions to social justice challenges and to become global leaders prepared to advance social, economic, and educational equality in the U.S. and abroad.
November 2025
The November issue of the AYCGL newsletter provides an update on the Andrew Young Center - Higher Education in Prisons (AYC-HEP) Program, including the Atlanta City Council’s honoring of Judge Winfield Murray, ‘98, and the AYC-HEP Program, and Dr. Taura Taylor’s recent appointment as the AYC-HEP Program Faculty Fellow. Scholar of Distinction, Jerremy Njuguna, shares his story and study abroad experience and the Center recognizes his significant contributions to the Morehouse community. The Center also welcomes Ms. Sage Anderson as the new AYCGL program coordinator. Finally, the newsletter highlights upcoming events, including International Education Week, which will take place November 10-13, 2025.
October 2025
The October issue of the AYCGL newsletter highlights scholars pursuing the Leadership Studies minor as well as the work of the Leadership Innovation Lab. The Lab, established in spring 2025, supports students seeking innovative, technology-based solutions to social justice challenges. The issue provides updates on recent events sponsored by the Office of International Education, including August’s Study Abroad Fair and the 4th Annual International Education Symposium held on September 10, 2025, as well as the National Recovery Bus Stop celebrating National Recovery Month, and a recent panel discussion, Imperfect Parallels, on the civil rights movements in the U.S. and Ireland.

The September 2025 newsletter shares the recent appointments of leaders in the Andrew Young Center, including the director of the Institute for Social Justice Research and Policy, Dr. Marisela Martinez-Cola, and the assistant director of the AYC - Higher Education in Prisons Program, Dr. Shari Mackinson. We also announce the promotion of Ms. Jeanine White to Assistant Director of the Office of International Education.

The April 2025 edition of the AYCGL newsletter highlights the Leadership Studies Program. The Leadership Studies Program at AYCGL is dedicated to preparing the Men of Morehouse to become influential leaders committed to social justice and positive change across diverse industries. The program emphasizes navigating the complexities of leadership in a society shaped by divisions along racial, gender, political, religious, national, and cultural lines.

Creating Change in 2025 — This year marks the 28-year anniversary of the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership. The Center, established by President Walter Massey and originally led by Walter Fluker, Ph.D., was founded with a mission to develop social justice-focused, ethical leaders through its Leadership Studies Program and other initiatives.

This issue of the AYCGL newsletter highlights the Center’s Leadership Studies Program which offers an academic minor at Morehouse College. Dr. Amos Johnson, the new program director, shares his vision for the Leadership Studies Program and provides updates on the program early in this academic year. This issue also highlights a recent Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program day of service at the King Center for Nonviolent Change and provides information on upcoming Center events.

The Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership seeks to extend the legacy of Ambassador Young and expand the footprint of Morehouse Beyond Borders into the community and the world. The Center is excited to welcome Dr. Amos Johnson as the new Director of the Leadership Studies Program and Dr. Walter Fluker as the 2024-25 Social Justice Scholar in Residence. We thank 2023-24 Scholar in Residence, Ms. Pamela Winn, for her leadership and share her essay on the role of HBCUs in developing policy advocates. In addition to highlighting recent events, this issue includes updates on international education, including study abroad.

The Andrew Young Center’s May 2024 newsletter highlights some of the Center’s initiatives that exemplify our commitment to expanding the impact of “Morehouse Beyond Borders” through the AYC-Higher Education in Prisons Program (AYC-HEP), policy and advocacy training, and study abroad. The issue highlights Congresswoman Nikema Williams’ recent visit to Morehouse to announce a congressional appropriation to support the AYC-Higher Education in Prisons Program, the recent EmpowerED Reentry Symposium held on the Morehouse campus, and the progress of the 2024 cohort of students taking classes in the U.S. Federal Penitentiary. The Policy and Advocacy teach-in series offered by Ms. Pamela Winn is highlighted as is Scholar of Distinction, Aubray Chevannes, III. This issue also highlights two study abroad programs: Morehouse in Bahia - The Afro-Brazilian Experience and Exploration of the African Diaspora in the United Kingdom, both of which took place during spring break 2024.
April 2024
The April 2024 newsletter highlights some of the Center’s programs that expand the impact of “Morehouse Beyond Borders” and celebrates the experiences of students participating in transformative experiences that shape their perspectives, expand their knowledge, and cultivate independence and respect for their own history and culture, as well as that of others. In March 2024 one of these programs, the AYCGL’s Higher Education in Prisons Program, received a congressional appropriation of $1,636,00 to support this work. This program expands the footprint of Morehouse College to underserved students, providing college courses, and a pathway to a degree, for incarcerated men and women. This issue highlights Morehouse scholar, Calvin Bell, III, in our Scholars of Distinction section and shares the experiences of students traveling abroad. Three scholars share their reflections on the transforming power of study abroad, including Amir Johnson who is currently studying in Finland, Jamari Chavis, who participated in the 2024 International Spring Tour, and Nasir Barnes, who participated in the 2024 Spring HBCU Taiwan Study Tour Program.
