The Many Lives of Andrew Young Exhibit
At Morehouse College
October 9 – November 9, 2023
|
|
As an ambassador, congressman, mayor, and civil rights leader, Andrew J. Young has created a legacy of leading the fight for the human and civil rights of people nationally and globally, providing leadership in pursuit of social justice, and creating opportunity and prosperity among those who are underserved. Young grew up with a drive to serve, first in the Peace Corps, and then as a pastor in rural Alabama. He was a civil rights leader who worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and played a crucial role in the civil rights movement. Young served as a Georgia congressman and then mayor of Atlanta, only the second Black mayor in its history (after another Morehouse graduate, Maynard Jackson), and ushered in unprecedented economic growth in the city. Young served as ambassador to the U.N. from 1977 to 1979. He led with moral clarity and was a champion for the under-served all over the world. Today, Ambassador Young continues to build his legacy as a servant leader through the Andrew J. Young Foundation which supports education, health, and leadership development in the U.S., Africa, and the Caribbean.

Study Abroad at Morehouse College
|
|
Creating opportunities for students to immerse themselves in the culture and experiences of others is a crucial step in creating understanding, respect, and recognition of the parallel challenges faced by world citizens in the U.S. and globally. Our leaders, current and future, must be globally mobile, equipped with global perspectives, and trained as technically and culturally competent global citizens.
To support the acquisition of skills, perspectives, and experiences that create global citizens and leaders, the Office of International Education (OIE) provides short-term and academic term, credit-bearing and noncredit-bearing study abroad programs for Morehouse College students. This year the OIE is focused on increasing the number of Morehouse students who study abroad for an academic term, thereby enriching their immersion in the culture of another country.

In Retrospect: Study Abroad During the 2022-23 Academic Year
During the last academic year (2022-23), 122 Morehouse students participated in a faculty/staff-led or academic term study abroad experience.
During the winter 2022 and spring 2023 (J-Mester and spring break) as the world emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic, 75 students participated in 8 faculty-led study abroad programs. During the summer 2023, 43 Morehouse College students participated in 5 faculty/staff-led study abroad programs.
The Delta Study Abroad Award supported students participating in programs traveling to Liberia, Belize, Ireland, India, South Africa, Senegal, and Mexico. The Julian Grace Social Justice Award supported students participating in programs traveling to Liberia, Ireland, South Africa and Senegal.
Five externally funded faculty/staff-led programs traveled to the Dominican Republic, Rwanda, Barbados, Ghana, Senegal, and Germany. These externally funded programs significantly reduced costs to students through strategic partnerships.
Morehouse faculty/staff-led programs enabled participants to gain new insights into the history, politics, and culture, business and innovation, science and technology, and education of these countries.
During the spring 2023, four Morehouse students pursued their academic studies abroad in semester-long programs. The students studied independently in London, England, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Paris, France. Each unique experience contributed to the students’ intellectual and academic growth as a scholar and leader.

|
On August 30, 2023, the Morehouse College Office of International Education (OIE) held its inaugural Study Abroad Fair and 2nd Annual International Education Symposium. The Study Abroad Fair exposed students to Morehouse College study abroad partners and programs. Students had the opportunity to learn about the passport application process and how to fund their study abroad experiences.
The Study Abroad Fair included Morehouse preferred providers CEACAPA, Arcadia, IES Abroad, ISEP, and CIEE, as well as representatives from the Gilman Scholarship, Fulbright Scholarship, and Atlanta Passport Office.
The International Education Symposium celebrated and highlighted the experiences of Morehouse College students who studied abroad during the winter term 2022/23, and spring and summer 2023. Projects of students who participated in social justice-focused study abroad experiences were also featured.
In addition to oral and poster presentations by students who participated in study abroad, the symposium featured representatives from USAID, the Department of State, and the Peace Corps. Financial Awards for Studying Abroad
The Andrew Young Fund for International Scholars was established in fall 2023 to support students with financial need who study abroad. The scholarship, funded by a $1 million gift to the AYCGL, will award up to $2400 to support students participating in faculty-led study abroad programs and up to $1400 to students participating in semester-long study abroad programs. Students planning to study abroad are encouraged to apply for the award.
Delta Airlines’ support of study abroad at Morehouse has been critical to the development and implementation of study abroad programs at the college. Delta’s most recent award to the Andrew Young Center funded the Delta Airlines Study Abroad Award. During the 2022-23 academic year, this award provides a scholarship for each Morehouse student participating in an approved faculty/staff-led study abroad program.
During the 2022-23 academic year, Morehouse offered the Julian Grace Social Justice Award to advance global social justice leadership development and the study of inequalities and civil and human rights. By providing students an opportunity to benefit from these transformative social justice-focused global experiences, the Julian Grace Award generated student research on social justice challenges, innovative solutions to global pressing issues, and leadership development among Morehouse College students.
Looking Ahead: Study Abroad During the 2023-24 Academic Year
The Office of International Education (OIE) seeks to Inform and empower Morehouse students to study abroad. Application deadlines for spring 2024 semester study abroad programs are in September, thus, OIE staff are educating and engaging students now to study abroad during the spring 2024. Once applicants have been confirmed, the OIE will work to design robust pre-departure orientations for students that will include topics such as traveling abroad for the first time, identity in an overseas context, cultural competence, maximizing the study abroad experience, and health and wellness abroad. We aim to use the pre-departure orientation as a time for students to build a bond as independent and collaborative travelers. Ms. Maraina Montgomery, director of international education, is leading efforts to increase the number of students who study abroad for the academic term.
Ms. Jeanine White, program coordinator for study abroad, leads implementation of faculty-led programs, working closely with faculty and students to facilitate and support faculty and staff leading programs. Programs are currently being planned for J-mester, spring break, and summer 2023.
We have many goals for the Office of International Education this academic year, and with the support of student ambassadors, student volunteers, and our new study abroad program coordinator, Ms. Nandi Musengwa, the OIE team will continue offering weekly opportunities for students to learn about study abroad, to discuss their personal goals, and to develop a globally conscious mindset!
To learn more about study abroad at Morehouse, please contact Ms. Maraina Montgomery (maraina.montgomery@morehouse.edu), Director of International Education, or Ms. Jeanine White (jeanine.white@morehouse.edu), Program Coordinator for Study Abroad.

However, her passion for international education truly began while teaching abroad in Spain for two years. Ms. Musengwa aims to empower students to explore the world and learn in new ways beyond the classroom. She is passionate about the transformative impact of studying abroad and looks forward to helping Men of Morehouse to experience the world!
