Chris Lambry on the Oprah Winfrey South Africa Leadership Program
On May 19, 2024, nine Oprah Winfrey scholars embarked on the 12-day South Africa Leadership Program! This transformative study abroad experience included visits to Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pilanesburg, and Cape Town, South Africa. The experience was highlighted by the opportunity to serve as official observers of South Africa’s presidential election, held 30 years after the election of Nelson Mandela. Scholars observed election processes at multiple sites and shared feedback with election officials. Observation of South Africa’s democratic elections became an opportunity to juxtapose this process in South Africa and the United States and generated fruitful discussions about the importance of and threats to democracy around the world.

Adults’ in Custody Generosity Shines Through: $2,605.00 Donation to Non-Profit Organization
In a gratifying display of kindness and generosity, a group of Adults in Custody at the United States Penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia, banded together to make a significant contribution to Frontline Response, a non-profit organization that rescues men, women and children from human traffickers, sex offenders, drug dealers and homelessness. Despite their conditions, the AICs managed to donate a total of $2,605.00, exemplifying the capability and the aspiration to make a positive impact during their incarceration.

Morehouse Higher Education In Prisons Program Gets $1.6 Million Federal Investment
Morehouse College has received a $1.6 million federal investment in the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership’s (AYCGL) Higher Education in Prisons Program. Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05), an Atlanta Democrat and member of the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus, made the announcement Thursday, April 4, on campus during 404 Day, a celebration of all things Atlanta.

Policy Advocacy within the Democratic Process
April 4, 2024 and April 11, 2024: This spring 2024, AYCGL Scholar-in-Residence, Pamela Winn, will present a 3-part AYCGL Teach-in series entitled, Policy Advocacy within the Democratic Process. This series will focus on Ms. Winn’s work as a policy advocate for individuals who are currently and formerly incarcerated. The second and third sessions of the Teach-in will be held on April 4th and April 11, 2024, in Merrill Hall, Room 111.

Panel Discussion on Belonging and Wellness
During the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, Dr. Sinead Younge joined an esteemed panel featuring Pulitzer Prize Poet, Dr. Jericho Brown, and Global DEI Consultant, Jad-Evangelo Nasser. According to the Human Rights Campaign, the 2023 state legislative session was the worst year on record for anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation.

Study Abroad at Morehouse
A cohort of twelve men from Morehouse traveled to Ireland during the J-mester to study the imperfect parallels between the civil rights movement in the US and Ireland.

J-Mester, South Carolina Study Tour: Understanding the Gullah Geechee Roots of Social Justice and Resistance
This January, Dr. Sinead Younge taught a January J-Mester Course entitled, Understanding the Gullah Geechee Roots of Social Justice and Resistance. The course explored the connection between South Carolina and Barbados using health as a lens to explore history, culture, food, and behavior.
