Summer 2022 Study Abroad Programs

The Andrew Young Center’s Office of International Education (OIE) works to expand study abroad programs, create an internationalized campus through curriculum and events, and supports faculty involvement in international initiatives. These efforts support the college’s strategic pillar, Morehouse Beyond Borders. In addition to supporting students’ academic year study abroad experiences, the OIE supports Morehouse faculty-led experiences during the summer, winter term, and spring break.

The Office of International Education is pleased to announce that seven faculty-led study abroad programs are ready to set sail for six countries this summer: South Africa, Senegal, Colombia, Nigeria, Germany, and Portugal.

A total of 74 students will study in one of these countries, and fourteen faculty and staff members will accompany them on their international educational journey. Each program is unique and has specific learning outcomes.

Despite the worldwide pandemic OIE has held its commitment to provide students with opportunities to strengthen their cross-cultural competence while pursuing their academic goals.  We take great pride in highlighting these important programs:

  • Oprah Winfrey South Africa Leadership Program, May 15 – 27, 2022. Led by Dr. Jann Adams and Dr. David Rice, this program allows Oprah Winfrey Scholars to participate in an intensive ten-day learning experience in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa from May 15-27, 2022.

South Africa Social Justice Experience, May 15 – 27, 2022. Led by Dr. Sinead Younge, this program runs concurrently with the Oprah Winfrey South Africa Leadership Program and expands the reach of the Oprah Winfrey Program to all students at the College.

The two programs will visit universities, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and historical sites in Cape Town and Johannesburg. There will be lively exchanges of ideas with South African students about leadership that include global and cross-cultural perspectives. Both programs will provide deep insights into cultural, socioeconomic, and political issues as well as increase students’ understanding of the causes, impact, and potential solutions to HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa.  In addition, program participants will draw comparisons between civil and human rights movements in South Africa and the US and evaluate the strategies of current and past social movements and their impact in dismantling of Apartheid.

  • Nigerian Entertainment Industry Study Abroad Program, May 22 – June 13, 2022. Located in the West of African continent, Nigeria has the largest economy and the greatest population in sub-Saharan Africa.  It has more than 500 ethnolinguistic cultures, out of 7000 in the world.  Nigeria’s rich musical traditions provide wonderful opportunities for students to study and experience its multi-cultural history. Under Dr. Arron Carter-Enyi’s directorship, students will explore the entertainment industry in Nigeria. They will interact with various artists and filmmakers and learn about Afrobeats music and “Nollywood”. The program is the first cooperation between the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and Morehouse College.

  • Senegal at the Crossroads: Democracy, Religion and Development, May 27 – June 4, 2022. Senegal poses a powerful mix of modern and tradition culture and is one of the fastest-growing countries in West Africa. The Senegal Program was established in collaboration with Planting A Seed International (PASI). Students will participate in this ten-day program directed by Dr. Taura Taylor and will learn about Senegal’s dynamic history and culture. The program includes visits to the Museum of Black Civilization, the Cheikh Anta Diop University, and the Monument of African Renaissance, as well as a trip to the “Door of No Return” at Goree Island, an important site of the African Slave Trade.  Additionally, students will attend a workshop organized by members of the Goree Institute and complete service projects for the local population in the regions of Fatick and Saint Louis.

  • Morehouse Pan-African Global Experience (MPAGE), Colombia, May 30 – June 15, 2022. MPAGE has been a signature study abroad program at Morehouse College for many years and is committed to cultivating the history and culture of Black people around the world.  MPAGE programs have offered Morehouse students the opportunities to travel to Ghana, Cuba, Mexico, Ecuador, and Brazil where there is a rich history of African Diaspora.  This year, students will participate in the MPAGE Colombia Program led by Drs. Michael Dillion and Cynthia Trawick, and Ms. Tomanika Redd.  The program integrates an academic course into visits to Bogota and Medellin, Colombia. Students will get glimpses into the African Diaspora while doing service-learning projects with Afro-Colombian communities. By combining an academic course with a study abroad experience, the program reflects OIE’s strong effort to create new models of international education at Morehouse College.

  • Germany STEM/Enterprise Launch Study Tour, May 15 – 28, 2022. This program, led by Drs. Ruihua Shen, Wallace Sharif, Mona Ray, and Ms. Jeannie White, will engage Morehouse STEM and Business and Economic majors as they visit science institutes, universities, and business enterprises in Germany. The program, a window into Germany’s STEM and business world, introduces Morehouse students to German STEM and business practices and models. In addition, it allows students to immerse themselves in Germany’s multicultural society, including experiencing German old and modern traditions, dining with German host families, and building bridges of friendship with locals.  Sponsored by the German Halle Foundation via the Cultural Vistas, this program has enabled a many Morehouse students to visit Germany over the last decade.

  • Morehouse Global Innovation & Entrepreneurial Thinking (European Innovation Academy), July 15 – August 5, 2022. Dr. Tiffany Bussey and Ms. Bonita Seaborn-More will lead Morehouse students to the city of Porto in Portugal where they will participate in the European Innovation Academy (EIA)’s summer program.  The goals of this three-week study abroad program about entrepreneurship and innovation are to develop participants’ entrepreneurial mindset and build business skills necessary for the creation of new business ventures.  Participants will learn step by step how to create and launch a startup business in a competitive World.
