March 2022

This year, 2022, marks the 25th Anniversary of the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership (AYCGL) and the 90th birthday of the namesake of the Center, Ambassador Andrew J. Young. Over the course of this year, the AYCGL will celebrate the leadership legacy of Ambassador Young and the history of the Leadership Center at Morehouse College.

AYCGL Prison Education Initiative

In the spirit of Morehouse Beyond Borders, the March 2022 AYCGL newsletter focuses on the Morehouse Prison Education Initiative. Over the past several years, the AYCGL has sponsored seven Morehouse College prison education faculty teaching affiliates. These affiliates teach humanities courses – literature and history as well as philosophy and art history – at various prisons and reentry programs in Atlanta. Morehouse serves as the lead institution at Burruss Correctional Facility and the Metro Prison Reentry Program. Prison education faculty teaching affiliates for 2021/2022 include Drs. Corrie Claiborne, Stephane Dunn, Keith Hollingsworth, Natasha Howard, Adrienne Jones, Kipton Jensen, and Winfield Murray, Esq., who serves as the site supervisor at Burruss. To learn more about the Prison Education Initiative and the compelling benefits of prison education, see our most recent blog entry: 2022.

Next Steps for Morehouse’s Prison Education Initiative
In 2022, the AYCGL seeks to enhance the reach and impact of our Prison Education Initiative with additional teaching affiliates to teach humanities courses or special topics workshops. Beyond the involvement of our faculty, our students are also engaged in experiential learning in the form of essay exchanges with incarcerated students, occasional site visits at Metro, and policy reform advocacy. Faculty and students from Morehouse recently participated in the GA Senate Committee on Higher Education. Jeremiah Davis (’22), a scholar in the AYCGL’s Social Justice Collective, collaborated with CGA, GACHEP, and students at Emory University on a policy ‘white paper’ for state legislators on the benefits of enhanced access to higher education in GA prisons.

Effective Partnerships Strengthen Prison Education Initiative
The Prison Education Initiative collaborates very closely with numerous community partners, primarily Common Good Atlanta, the Georgia Department of Corrections, and the Georgia Coalition for Higher Education in Prison. We are also working with the JAMII Sisterhood on the ‘Freedom Project,’ which aims at increasing of the representation of Black and LatinX persons engaged in higher education in prison. The AYCGL Prison Education Initiative is coordinated by Kipton Jensen and Sinead Younge.

College Behind Bars Screen and Panel Discussion, Reentry Fair
On March 2, 2022, the AYCGL hosted a Reentry Fair and screening and panel discussion of College Behind Bars. Featuring a screening of a portion of the documentary and panel discussion among formerly incarcerated students and activists, this event also focused on the many challenges of reentry. The panel included Pamela Winn, Rodney Spivey-Jones, Kareemah Hanifa, Jule Hall, Dyjuan Tatro, and Calvin Bell III. Prior to the screening and panel discussion, the AYCGL sponsored a Reentry Fair comprised of representatives from local reentry services organizations: Common Good Atlanta, Georgia Coalition for Higher Education, RestoreHER, Urban League ATL, Office of Reentry Services, IMAN, Georgia Justice Projects, ReNforce, New Life Second Chance Outreach, Goodwill, and Women on the Rise. During their visit to Morehouse, three of the panelists featured in the College Behind Bars documentary – Jule Hall, Rodney Spivey-Jones, and DyjuanTatro – met with students in leadership studies, political science, and philosophy.
