The Institute for International and Experiential Education

The AYCGL’s Institute for International and Experiential Education is home to two scholarship programs, the Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program and SMASH Scholars Program. Both scholarship programs provide social justice-focused leadership training and academic support. The institute also leads the college’s international education efforts through the Office of International Education.

The Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program

The Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program was established in 1989 by a $12 million gift from Ms. Winfrey. In October 2019, Ms. Winfrey returned to Morehouse and made an additional gift of $13 million, resulting in the creation of the largest endowment at Morehouse College. The Program has funded the educations of over 700 Morehouse Men.

On Wednesday, April 27, 2022, the Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program gathered at Davidson House for its annual celebration of seniors. Scholars enjoyed greetings from President David Thomas and a wonderful dinner. Seniors presented their capstone project, sharing an overview and highlights of their experiences in the program. Additionally, attendees were invited to watch a Virtual Reality video featuring Oprah Winfrey senior scholars talking about the impact of the Program on their matriculation and lives.

Summer 2022 Study Abroad Programs

The Andrew Young Center’s Office of International Education (OIE) provides globally informed leadership and academic experiences for Morehouse College students. The OIE works with Morehouse faculty and staff to grow study abroad and create an internationalized campus through curriculum and events. These efforts support the college’s strategic pillar, Morehouse Beyond Borders. In addition to supporting students’ academic year study abroad experiences, the OIE supports faculty-led experiences during the summer, winter term, and spring break.

The Office of International Education is pleased to announce that seven faculty-led study abroad programs are ready to set sail for six countries this summer: South Africa, Senegal, Colombia, Nigeria, Germany, and Portugal.

A total of 74 students will study in one of these countries, and fourteen faculty and staff members will accompany them on their international educational journey. Each program is unique and has specific learning outcomes.

Despite the worldwide pandemic OIE has remained committed to providing students with opportunities to gain global experiences while pursuing their academic goals.  We take great pride in highlighting these important programs:

Social Justice Leadership and Innovation Award: Student Spotlight

Calvin R. Bell III received the Social Justice and Leadership Innovation Award to advance his research on the similarity of educational institutions to carceral spaces. His project also calls on leaders to use an ethic of “radical love” to bring about social transformation. He presented his research at the National Undergraduate Research Conference, the Yale Bouchet Research Conference, and the Johns Hopkins University Macksey Undergraduate Humanities Symposium. Mr. Bell also served as a panelist in the Andrew Young Center’s Prison Behind Bars panel discussion and facilitated a discussion with President Emeritus Robert M. Franklin on his book titled Moral Leadership.

The Opportunity Agenda: Advancing Equity and Justice for All 2022

The Center’s Institute for Research, Civic Engagement, and Policy partnered with the Atlanta NAACP, The People’s Agenda, Georgia Stand-Up, and other local grassroots organizations to hold a forum on April 30 at Friendship Baptist Church. Attended by citizens, organization leaders, and elected officials, participants developed policy ideas to address four major areas of concerns: economic development, criminal justice, education, and health care. Participants identified barriers to equity and envisioned ways local government can partner with grassroots organizers and citizens to address the needs of historically marginalized communities. This was the beginning of a series of dialogues, with work continuing this summer on a set of action items developed during the forum and a meeting with a wider set of stakeholders to be held this fall.
