| | Leadership Studies Program |
| Leadership is influence, and in today's society, it can be self-obtained through social media without gatekeepers. This democratization of leadership can be both positive and negative, as it allows people to gain influence for good or bad. The Leadership Studies Program, under the leadership of Amos Johnson Jr., PhD, is leading the charge to build upon the foundation of social justice while expanding its scope to include leadership in technology and other fields Men of Morehouse are studying. Our goal is to equip the Men of Morehouse to steward their influence in this new world where everyone has the potential to gain a leadership platform. Morehouse Men will lead the way for the good of society amidst diverse opinions about what is "good." We aim for Morehouse Men to navigate the tension of leading in a society divided along racial, gender, political, religious, national, and cultural lines. |
| | Leadership in the Community |
| As part of the Social Justice Leadership course taught by Visiting Assistant Professor Rodney Walker, students participate in service action days. Professor Walker has dedicated several class sessions to demonstrations of service leadership in the community.
On September 5th, 2024, students traveled to the intersection of Abernathy Blvd. and Evans St. in the West End neighborhood to learn about the community’s needs, challenges, and ongoing trauma in the wake of a tragic shooting that took place the year prior. Julius Khalid [pictured right], founder of the YG Urban Café, shared the series of events that led to a group of young men taking each other’s lives outside his business, the systemic and cultural challenges that plague young Black men, and the need for the Atlanta University Center to become more involved in the hope, healing, and restoration of its surrounding community. |
| | | | Chair of the Leadership Studies Program, Dr. Amos Johnson, has introduced a new course on leadership in tech in partnership with Google. The course provides a broad introduction to leading a diverse team of developers, designers, and executives in the field of product management (PM). Students develop the skills required to obtain and execute an entry-level position in the industry at Google and other tech companies. At the start of the school year, students had the opportunity to participate in the filming of a promo for Shark Tank, where a Morehouse graduate will be featured as a guest shark. The students also have had the opportunity to travel to Google’s Atlanta headquarters and learn from Black PMs at Google. |
| | | | Scholar in Residence and former Chair of Leadership Studies at Morehouse, Dr. Walter Earl Fluker, is teaching a course on Ethical Leadership: Character, Civility, and Community. This course provides students with theoretical and practical approaches for cultivating character, civility, and community as a critical framework for the development of ethical leadership. Students are examining the personal, public, and spiritual dimensions of leadership within the context what Fluker calls “the intersection of lifeworlds and systems,” outlining principles and practices of ethical leadership from a diverse range of leadership theories. Dr. Fluker’s work grounds leadership in story (the appropriation of one’s personal narrative and dramaturgical methodology) within social and historical contexts as a basis for individual and social transformation. |
