On May 19, 2024, nine Oprah Winfrey scholars embarked on the 12-day South Africa Leadership Program! This transformative study abroad experience included visits to Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pilanesburg, and Cape Town, South Africa. The experience was highlighted by the opportunity to serve as official observers of South Africa’s presidential election, held 30 years after the election of Nelson Mandela. Scholars observed election processes at multiple sites and shared feedback with election officials. Observation of South Africa’s democratic elections became an opportunity to juxtapose this process in South Africa and the United States and generated fruitful discussions about the importance of and threats to democracy around the world.
In a gratifying display of kindness and generosity, a group of Adults in Custody at the United States Penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia, banded together to make a significant contribution to Frontline Response, a non-profit organization that rescues men, women and children from human traffickers, sex offenders, drug dealers and homelessness. Despite their conditions, the AICs managed to donate a total of $2,605.00, exemplifying the capability and the aspiration to make a positive impact during their incarceration.
Morehouse College has received a $1.6 million federal investment in the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership’s (AYCGL) Higher Education in Prisons Program. Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05), an Atlanta Democrat and member of the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus, made the announcement Thursday, April 4, on campus during 404 Day, a celebration of all things Atlanta.
